No matter how hard we try or how careful we are, kids come across mouth kissing in animated movies.

What should be your first reaction?

Our certified Positive Discipline Educator from US Positive Discipline Association, Rana Hany, assures us that the least favorable reaction is changing the channel or covering your child’s eyes because this will definitely trigger their curiosity. Ignoring the topic is not recommended because children who are too shy to talk with their parents, might save the image in their minds and ask friends later or try it themselves.

Hany elaborated that your reaction depends on your child’s. If he covered his eyes, you should ask him why he did so and his thoughts about such scenes. You have to ask open questions and start a discussion to know what he’s thinking about. Hany added that before the age of 6, you can explain that married couples -like you and his father- kiss the same way without including details about different cultures and the idea of halal and haram.

For older children, you could add more details and explain that this is not accepted in our culture as opposed to western ones, because they will definitely get introduced to the concept through media.

Kisses are not yucky

“It’s a very big mistake to refer to kissing as disgusting because this will affect your child’s sexual mentality later on,” Hany highlighted.

Hany believes that the more you ban movies, the more curious they become. You can permit such cartoons, especially if they include valuable messages, but under your supervision and ensuring an open discussion with your child and addressing their questions and concerns.

Hany mentioned that sometimes you might find that your child wants to kiss you from the mouth. Don’t panic as children love imitating what they see and mothers are their safe zone. Hany pointed out that generally, it’s very important to always be acquainted with children’s concerns at different ages, so we can provide them with the right information and tips before anyone else.
