Last night’s rain mess took over Cairo and led to chaotic traffic and blocked roads. For mothers, this rainy day meant kids stuck in school buses for hours and not being able to reach nurseries and schools on time. Online communities and school’s Whatsapp groups were in panic mode while seeking help and pleading people to help any bus stuck in the streets.
Although it was a tragic day filled with mothers worrying and kids’ panicking due to the lack of food, water, and toilets, many places showed generous actual steps to ease the situation.
Here is a list of venues that chose to be kind and considerate and helped school students during rain chaos:
Nurseries and Schools
Many nurseries and schools extended their working hours till evening – without extra fees – until parents showed up and took their kids.
The team of Trillium stayed with the kids until parents arrived. They gave them food, calmed them down, and distracted them by telling stories.
Rise and Shine Kinder-Care
The nursery opened its doors till 10:30 PM with full nursery services like feeding, changing diapers, and helping kids to nap.
Big Bird Nursery
Nannies at the nursery – soaked in water – delivered the kids to their parents’ cars, shielding them with covers and umbrellas. The kids felt extremely safe. The security guards kept on sweeping the water away at the entrance so nannies can walk safely.
The Baby Academy
The Merghany Branch staff stayed with the children till 10 PM.
The team didn’t just stay up late or take care of the kids. The staff clapped to all mothers the moment they arrived at the nursery assuring them that they did a great job and calming them down. They made sure that all the kids went to the bathroom before leaving and that their clothes are heavy enough. Moreover, the nursery was open today at 8 AM sharp to save working mothers.
Saint Claire’s College
The school opened the nun house for the girls to stay inside and offered food and cartoons to watch. The sisters and admin team carried the children by themselves to their parents’ cars.
Saint Fatima School
The Nasr City branch was operating till 7 PM.
We do believe many nurseries and schools did a great job and their teams acted as real mums for the kids. What is more interesting is that other places’ contributed and opened their bathrooms for children to use.
Extreme need to use the bathroom
We have to sincerely thank Baron Hotel Blu Radisson Hotel, Ideal Standard store, and On the Run Merghany branch for allowing children to use their facilities.
Respectfully, Tiger, Chips Company, sent trucks to Nasr City distributing potato chips to people stuck on the road.
It didn’t stop at big venues, there were many heartwarming individual acts that contributed to making the day easier. We would like to mention a pharmacist at Al Ashry Pharmacy, Nasr City, who offered his cellular phone to one of Rahet Bally mothers who was stuck on the road with her kid with no mobile phone.
We do believe that this is the true side of Egyptians that blossoms during hard times. We only mentioned the places we heard of. Please share with us any positive experience you and your child had.
A big shout out to every bus driver and matron who managed to keep tens of kids calm.
Stay safe with your little ones!
